First Supper

Haiti’s Independence Soup (Soup Joumou), which is traditionally served in remembrance of the Haitian Revolution of 1804, the only successful enslaved people’s revolt in history to establish a free Black republic.

Rooted in this legacy, First Supper honors the revolution not only through food, but through land-based practice, collective gathering, and ancestral remembrance. The soup, prepared intentionally with ingredients grown from the earth, serves as a living symbol of resilience, liberation, and the spiritual and physical labor required to claim freedom.

Through this yearly welcoming, we remember that freedom was cultivated, from the soil, from the spirit, and from collective will, and that nourishment has always been a revolutionary act.
